Since this may be the last newsletter you see before the election, I wanted to talk about it some. Apologies to our members outside the US, this probably won’t apply directly to you.
First, vote. Seriously. It does count. Even if it is hard to see that – and I say this as someone who has never lived in a state that was even close to being ‘swing’ (Indiana, South Carolina, Illinois, & Alabama). How I vote has never influenced a national election, not once. Yet, I have voted in every election I have been able to.
There is more than the national race, of course. From state-level representation to ballot initiatives, there is a lot to decide when you vote. So even if you truly believe your vote doesn’t matter at the national level, it can at the state or local level.
Sadly, American politics, especially as expressed online, has devolved into a good/evil dichotomy. Gone are the days when we tried to operate as if the other side was after the same basic end result and we merely disagreed on the process. With the rise of internet echo chambers, we find that the conversation is increasingly ‘my side good and righteous and holy, their side bad and vile and evil’. And that just isn’t the case. Most of us agree on the things we all want to see happen. Yes, there are fringe cases – no political system is without them – and there is always going to be those individuals who start with burning it all down. Most of us are not in that camp.
- So, as we approach the election, I want you to do some things.
Remember that we are, organizationally, apolitical. I hope you all have personal political alignments, regardless of their alignment with my own. And I hope you are all active at your level of interest or comfort within those alignments. However, TRMN is not the place for them. This is a general statement, not one aimed at any person, persons, groups, or events. - Remember that as confused or offended as you may be at someone else’s political alignment, there is someone who feels the exact same way about yours. And think how you would like to be treated before acting.
- Consider a break from social media. This is one of the echo chambers I mentioned above. Social media does not reward reasoned or thoughtful expressions. It rewards memes and over the top expressions. Social media has a lot of potential for good…but is too often a force for…not evil per se, but certainly not for good. If you can, take a breather.
- Remember that we are all in this together. Regardless of the outcome, we are all still members of the RMN, and still neighbors, friends, and compatriots. Your opinion of the outcome of the election should not break those bonds.
- Remember that just because someone is a shipmate, echelon CO, fleet CO, or higher, you do not have to connect over social media. You don’t have to agree with them, or pretend to, in order to remain in a chapter with them. It’s ok to unfollow your shipmates. Really. While I prefer to mute, or unfollow, it is even ok to unfriend them. And if you need to for your own mental or emotional health, then do it! Really. It’s ok.
- Lastly, remember to show the kind of grace or behavior you wish to be shown. Let people back off…we force engagement with pirates and slavers, not each other.
This was long, and I hope you read it, and thought about at least something in there. It is important that we try to focus on what unites us, not what divides us.
Now get out there and vote!
Comings & Goings
Opening of the Prince Adalbert Marineakademie (PAMA)
It is with great pleasure that I announce the opening of the Prince Adalbert Marineakademie (PAMA). Currently we would like to direct all interested parties to register for our basic enlisted course. More courses will be coming available in the near future. Please be patient and I will let everyone know when they do.
BuPlan Directive 2009-03
Lieutenant Commander Giese, effective immediately, you are hereby appointed Director of Operations for the Bureau of Planning to oversee the Office of Intelligence and Convention Services with all the rights and responsibilities of the post. Please report immediately to Commodore Andrew Harper, Deputy Second Space Lord, for office assignment and onboarding instruction.
Congratulations!
October Reports
This is a reminder that your Chapter and MarDet reports are due between October 1st and 10th. One thing I found amazingly helpful when filling them out was to use an online document (Google Docs, Word Online) to keep things organized as they happened. Then, when the reporting month hit, I could just copy and paste them into the reports form, and be done. No trying to remember what happened two months ago at the last minute!
Marines – you now have a new online form to fill out for Bi-Monthly reports. The link is below. It will send the reports to your command triad, your Ship’s CO and to ComForceCom. Please use this form to send in your report that is due on June 5th.
There is only one stipulation with the form at this time. Please do not use autofill. Autofill does not work properly and that information is deleted in the report. You can copy and paste information into the report but forgo the autofill function.
Ring of Fire Con 2020
Join David Weber, Eric Flint, and a bulk freighter’s worth of other authors for the virtual Ring of Fire Con, October 8 – 11!
Seriously, the author list is amazing… and you need to check it out (seeing is believing).
ATTENDANCE AT THE CONVENTION IS FREE—but you do need to register in order to attend. Once you register, you will be kept informed of news and developments as we approach the convention. Attendees will also be able to attend Steve Jackson Games FnordCon on October 10th.
Supporters of ROFCON will, depending on their support level, be able to select from several e books from Ring of Fire Press. This is a great chance to explore new or new-to-you authors!
Upcoming Events
As COVID-19 continues to flare in many states, large gatherings are being canceled across the board. Until it is safe to do so, Fleet advises considering all conventions ‘probably canceled’ for the foreseeable future.
We will return to our regular list of events once the situation allows.
Blood Drive Flyers!
BuComm-Approved blood drive flyers are available!
Each poster is available in 11 x 17 as a form-fillable PDF. Just enter your specific details, and your customized Blood Drive flyer is ready to go!
I want to thank SMAJ Brad Handley, MARDET Ajax, for spearheading the project, coming up with the idea and providing excellent suggestions on changes to the design. There is a ready-to-use version linked below:
Sanctioned RMN LARP
To: All Officers, Enlisted, and Civilians in the Grand Alliance
From: Martin A. Lessem, KSK, GCR, GCE, SC, DSO, CGM, Admiral of the Fleet, First Lord of the Admiralty, Duke, New Scania
Re: LARP and RMN
This is to announce the following:
TRMN has been approved to run, with the help of Quest Adventure Gaming, a single run RMN LARP (Live Action Role Play)
This LARP will follow the HMS Ballista, CA-586, a Saganami-C class Heavy Cruiser from Manticore, as she conveys military observers from the Grand Alliance, to the Solarian System and meets up with the Grand Fleet, to put a rubber stamp on Admiral Alexander-Harrington’s terms of surrender.
The LARP will run in November of 2021 onboard the USS Edson, DD-946, a decommissioned Forrest Sherman class Destroyer in Saginaw Bay, Michigan.
It will be open to TRMN players and non-TRMN players, and a price, which will be all inclusive to cover participation, food, lodging, and uniforms will shortly be set once we know the maximum number of players possible. For those TRMN members who are able to use their own uniforms, based on the Characters you sign up for, this will be permitted. The Characters will be pre-written, so you will not be playing your TRMN personas, but some of them may be mentioned in the overall story.
As this has been approved by David Weber, the story itself will be canonical, even if the outcome may divert due to players being players.
Further information on this will follow as we begin putting things in place together with Quest Adventure Gaming.
IMPORTANT NOTE – This is not to be construed as blanket permission for TRMN LARPS. This event is a one-off, and approved by David, and supported by BuNine to ensure as much adherence to canon as possible.
Please feel free to ask any questions you may have and they will be answered as soon as possible.
Gryphon’s Wings Fleet Relief Project
On May 23rd we launched the Gryphon’s Wings Fleet Relief Project. The response has been overwhelming, and I am humbled by the generosity of our members.
We are currently in the midst of a Global pandemic. However, while we are all in the same storm, we are navigating the waters on different ships. Sometimes these waters will be more than we can handle on our own, and we need an extra hand on deck. We want you to know that the 2nd fleet is here for you.
To that end, we are asking for donations to create an emergency relief fund to be used for TRMN 2nd Fleet members. This fund’s target is to provide immediate short term relief of an urgent crisis. For example: Sending someone grocery money for a weeks worth of groceries (as a lot of food banks are running out of food, short on volunteers, and closing), providing gas money for a week so someone can still travel back and forth providing care-giving to a family member, covering the co-pay cost of a doctors visit, and other small emergency expenses. Anything helps. I am asking for a $5 monthly commitment – the cost of a Starbucks coffee – to assist. Please join me, and those who have already donated, in making TRMN more than just a fan group. Click here, or the banner below, to donate. Meet the Test.
At the same time, we know some are being affected by the effort to combat the virus, including job loss, other reduction of income, medical difficulties, etc. This can result in a tough choice between shelter, transportation, food, or medical care. That is an impossible choice no one should be required to face, and we want to help how we can.
To apply for a Visa Gift Card for you or another member, please click here.
Only the 2nd Fleet CO will see who the requester and/or the potential recipient is. This will never be held against you in any way. We don’t ask for or expect repayment. This is not charity, we are simply keeping the RMN tradition of seeing that a Queen’s Navy is well rested, well fed, and healthy before going into battle. And this is a battle where victory will be measured in not just survivors but in the quality of that survival.
