Flag Sends
There are two things going on in this month’s Flag Sends. First, an update on the challenge coin drive, and second something a bit more serious.
So, first, we have more than doubled the goal on the fleet challenge coin drive! Thank you to everyone in the Fleet & wider organization who pledged to support this endeavor. With this, we will be able to order a whopping 500 coins, with individual plastic coin capsules. I will be putting the order in as soon as Indiegogo pays out, and we may have these in time for Christmas. Below is the proof image from the manufacturer, showing what these ought to look like once you have them in hand.
As a tease or warning (you decide), next year we will begin a long-run fundraising effort for Worldcon operations. I don’t have any real details on that yet, just that it is on the distant horizon.
Now for some more serious stuff.
I am seeing a lot of commentary online about depression and mental health. We are entering the period of not only weather-induced isolation, but also seasonal depression. All this is on top of the issues linked to the pandemic and continuing shutdowns. I fear those already more prone to SAD and other winter doldrums may find this to be an especially hard season.
Because of all the additional factors at play this year, I want to encourage everyone to check on your fellow members. Take the time to reach out, make sure they are ok. If someone who is usually active or around goes quiet, please check up on them, don’t assume they are ok.
And to those of us who are facing depression, SAD, etc., don’t be afraid to reach out and ask for help. It needn’t be more than a text message asking how you are. All too often, people don’t know there is a problem because they can’t see it – help them see it. Your comrades in the Fleet want to help, want to make sure you are ok (or as ok as possible). Help them help you, keep in touch, and don’t be afraid to admit it’s tough.
As always, you can email me directly at co@gryphonfleet.org, and I will listen. You can also DM me on Discord or ping me on Facebook Messenger.
Keep in touch with each other. Keep safe, and be well. When it gets bad, remember…this too shall pass.

Retirement Announcement
I Martyn Griffiths VADM GSN do hereby give notice that I intend to retire from Grayson Military Service as of 01 Nov 2020. This has been brought forward from a discussed date with FLA and HA mainly due to increasing problems caused by arthritis, especially in my hands making manual tasks both difficult and painful so I will be entering Grayson Civil Life as of that date.

BuPers Launches YouTube Channel
The Bureau of Personnel is pleased and proud to announce that working together with the Department of Communications of the First Space Lord, we have launched a YouTube channel dedicated to helping members navigate the TRMN experience. Videos coming soon!
TRMN members with video ideas can send them to membership@bupers.trmn.org.
Please visit and subscribe to the channel here.
Second Fleet Holding Station
Since we began, more or less, new members who are either not close to a chapter, undecided, or inactive when a ship decommissioned have been assigned to HMSS Greenwich, the holding chapter. This was a great idea when we started, but as we’ve grown, the idea of a centralized, organization-wide, holding chapter has become less of a great idea.
Several months ago, discussions were held about breaking this chapter into Fleet-specific holding chapters, based on where people live. Each Fleet would then have their own station to maintain, and would be responsible for contacting these members, and working to get them active.
Initially, the plan was to have each holding station be named for the Fleet nickname…but we already have HMS Gryphon, so that won’t work here. We get to pick our own holding station name! There were 23 names submitted on the Discord chat that were voted on. Voting was held on Discord, Facebook, the Forums, and on our website, with it being announced in those places, as well as an email to the members at large. 192 votes later, and we have a clear winner.
Coming soon, we will be the home of HMSS North Star, the Second Fleet Holding Station.
What’s next? Well, once the move is finalized, I will be reaching out to the folk on HMSS North Star, and inviting them into our socials, and seeing how to get them integrated into the Fleet. In time, we will need a command team, but that is down the road some, and I will post more about it when the time is right.
Until then, thank all of you who voted, and remember to get out & vote in the real world too!
Worldcon Leadership Positions Open
As I may have mentioned, the 80th World Science Fiction Convention (Worldcon) will be in Chicago in 2022. Based on what I am seeing regarding COVID, I continue to have every expectation that this will be an in-person event, and planning is beginning based on that assumption.
As we all know, conventions don’t plan themselves. To plan our activities and presence at the convention, the local leadership teams and I have begun building a framework we believe will allow us to not only make a huge, positive splash at the convention, but also break the workload down enough so that no one person is overburdened. It is my goal to have an executive team in place this year, and spend 2021 planning, lining up the division leads, and doing any proof-of-concept work at conventions that happen that year. This leaves the first 9 months of 2022 to lock down attendees, get everyone swagged up, and then show Worldcon what The Royal Manticoran Navy is capable of!
But first, we need the section leaders in place – the executive team. CAPTJG Samuel Dietzmann, CO HMS Demon has agreed to serve as Project Director – the day-to-day leader. MCPO Rick Waterson, Bosun, HMS Demon has agreed to serve as our Senior NCO, advising and keeping us officers in line. Rick brings years of concom experience to the table, as well as experience with Worldcon. Sam brings organizational and conceptual skills from the burner community (think Burning Man), as well as a developed vision of how TRMN can present itself to the Worldcon community at large.
What we need now is you. Yes, you. We have 5 roles to fill on the executive team – the strategy level. Each role is described below, but all share the same basic commitments:
- Be willing to commit to this until the convention is over on September 5, 2022
- Recruit your division heads, and plan how your team will perform their part of the Worldcon operation
- Participate in monthly Zoom (or similar) leadership meetings
- Hold team meetings on a regular schedule, and keep the leadership team up to speed on how planning is progressing
- Prepare & submit a budget for what is needed to realize your team’s plans
I know it seems like a lot. Fortunately, we have enough lead time so that we don’t need to rush. To our members in Minnesota – and those closely involved with CONvergence in particular – we would love to have your participation. Your experience with a larger convention will be vital to planning Worldcon events.
So, what are these leadership roles going to be? Here is a breakdown of the positions:
Con Interface/Liaison – This position will integrate with the Worldcon planners at the earliest possible time. They will work directly with me to get into contact with Space Lords and Royal Council members to get them engaged, and on as many panels as possible. Additionally, we would want this person to be on the lookout for as many opportunities at Worldcon for TRMN to stand out as we can find. One additional responsibility for this department is to work with the convention to promote our Safe Space policy, and work to build up trust with the concom so that they are comfortable coming to us should they need anything that touches on that. We will have more on this part as we go – but it is slated to include everything from somewhere to escape harassment to first aid to evacuation planning. One goal we have is to run Artemis at the convention – this role would oversee that as well, since it requires active convention participation as well as TRMN participation.
Administration Department Head – Admin Head will be in charge of our Finance, Purchasing, and Scheduling divisions. This role will include securing the party room reservations along with maintenance of an onsite “office”. After the convention, Admin will also be responsible for submitting the OQE for the group, and the participation ribbon tracking via Scheduling. Admin will integrate closely with Project Director and Executive Director (FCO) due to the fiduciary oversight aspect of the role.
Logistics Department Head – Getting details on load in/out for the con. Securing transportation of equipment and materials to the site. Deploying the room for the room party, (Furniture moving, plastic, set up of bar without liquor, hand off of table materials, etc.) Onsite they will be responsible for room maintenance and cleaning that is not specifically tasked to the bar or galley. Restocking the recruiting table and running to stores if a purchase needs to be made, Requisitioning the funds or turning over receipts as needed. Organizing a pre room party opening crew chow hour.
Recruitment Table Head – Ensuring it is fully staffed, the setup of the space, securing paraphernalia and swag (not responsible for purchase but in keeping the table supplied). Coming up with activities to make the table a fun place to hang out. Working with scheduling to ensure that the table is not just staffed but staffed with good combos of people to represent the organization. Ensuring those staffing the table are aware of things to talk up, and the table is driving people to other TRMN events. Ensuring that those staffing the table are presenting the best aspects of Her Majesty’s Navy.
Room Party Head – Making sure the supplies don’t run dry. Finding things to keep people entertained in the room. Coming up with Themes to keep the party fresh. Ensuring the party room is stocked with everything needed to maintain a safe space. Advertising the party to get other people interested. Ensuring the fire evacuation plan is known to the Officers In Charge. Working with the other Branches to ensure representation, events like a “MarDet Tap Takeover”, for example.
Each of these will head up between one and six divisions. Room Party Head will have the largest team, for obvious reasons.
I do want to stress that this is a big commitment, not only in time (length and quantity) and responsibility, but also visibility. Please consider all these things before expressing interest. Currently this is not a ‘hatted’ role. There is a chance the role will expand to be a full hat equivalent as we get closer to the convention. Since this is not a Fleet position, but a convention planning position, the hat rule will not apply. I also want to stress that this is not an ‘officer’ role, these (and all the other positions) need to be filled by the best people possible, regardless of rank. Do not let rank hold you back! If we get a highly skilled S3c as Admin Head, great! If their number 2 is a Rear Admiral, so what? Ability is the only thing that matters here.
Contact either worldcon@gryphonfleet.org or cos@gryphonfleet.org if one of these roles speaks to you. I look forward to working with the team, and am excited to plan Second Fleet’s Worldcon presence!
Upcoming Events
As COVID-19 continues to flare in many states, large gatherings are being canceled across the board. Until it is safe to do so, Fleet advises considering all conventions ‘probably canceled’ for the foreseeable future.
We will return to our regular list of events once the situation allows.

Sanctioned RMN LARP
To: All Officers, Enlisted, and Civilians in the Grand Alliance
From: Martin A. Lessem, KSK, GCR, GCE, SC, DSO, CGM, Admiral of the Fleet, First Lord of the Admiralty, Duke, New Scania
Re: LARP and RMN
This is to announce the following:
TRMN has been approved to run, with the help of Quest Adventure Gaming, a single run RMN LARP (Live Action Role Play)
This LARP will follow the HMS Ballista, CA-586, a Saganami-C class Heavy Cruiser from Manticore, as she conveys military observers from the Grand Alliance, to the Solarian System and meets up with the Grand Fleet, to put a rubber stamp on Admiral Alexander-Harrington’s terms of surrender.
The LARP will run in November of 2021 onboard the USS Edson, DD-946, a decommissioned Forrest Sherman class Destroyer in Saginaw Bay, Michigan.
It will be open to TRMN players and non-TRMN players, and a price, which will be all inclusive to cover participation, food, lodging, and uniforms will shortly be set once we know the maximum number of players possible. For those TRMN members who are able to use their own uniforms, based on the Characters you sign up for, this will be permitted. The Characters will be pre-written, so you will not be playing your TRMN personas, but some of them may be mentioned in the overall story.
As this has been approved by David Weber, the story itself will be canonical, even if the outcome may divert due to players being players.
Further information on this will follow as we begin putting things in place together with Quest Adventure Gaming.
IMPORTANT NOTE – This is not to be construed as blanket permission for TRMN LARPS. This event is a one-off, and approved by David, and supported by BuNine to ensure as much adherence to canon as possible.
Please feel free to ask any questions you may have and they will be answered as soon as possible.

Gryphon’s Wings Fleet Relief Project
On May 23rd we launched the Gryphon’s Wings Fleet Relief Project. The response has been overwhelming, and I am humbled by the generosity of our members.
We are currently in the midst of a Global pandemic. However, while we are all in the same storm, we are navigating the waters on different ships. Sometimes these waters will be more than we can handle on our own, and we need an extra hand on deck. We want you to know that the 2nd fleet is here for you.
To that end, we are asking for donations to create an emergency relief fund to be used for TRMN 2nd Fleet members. This fund’s target is to provide immediate short term relief of an urgent crisis. For example: Sending someone grocery money for a weeks worth of groceries (as a lot of food banks are running out of food, short on volunteers, and closing), providing gas money for a week so someone can still travel back and forth providing care-giving to a family member, covering the co-pay cost of a doctors visit, and other small emergency expenses. Anything helps. I am asking for a $5 monthly commitment – the cost of a Starbucks coffee – to assist. Please join me, and those who have already donated, in making TRMN more than just a fan group. Click here, or the banner below, to donate. Meet the Test.
At the same time, we know some are being affected by the effort to combat the virus, including job loss, other reduction of income, medical difficulties, etc. This can result in a tough choice between shelter, transportation, food, or medical care. That is an impossible choice no one should be required to face, and we want to help how we can.
To apply for a Visa Gift Card for you or another member, please click here.
Only the 2nd Fleet CO will see who the requester and/or the potential recipient is. This will never be held against you in any way. We don’t ask for or expect repayment. This is not charity, we are simply keeping the RMN tradition of seeing that a Queen’s Navy is well rested, well fed, and healthy before going into battle. And this is a battle where victory will be measured in not just survivors but in the quality of that survival.
