Flag Sends

This is the last Flag Sends I will be writing, and I wanted to reflect on how Second Fleet has changed since I relieved VADM Westmarch on June 1, 2019.

First, the obvious. 10 months after taking the position, we shut down for COVID. The impact that had on the Fleet, and organization, as a whole cannot be understated. In Second Fleet we saw two paths, and took them both. Some chapters made nearly seamless transitions to virtual existence, and kept going almost business as usual. Other chapters struggled, having always been in-person, and not being prepared to discard that experience. Regardless, it was hard on everyone, and that was reflected in our chapters.

Through it all, however, we persevered as a Fleet, and as friend groups. Is it different? Of course. Change is growth after all. But we did grow, finding new ways to do things, new ways to reach people and engage with them, and new ways to be who we are.

And our numbers show it. When I took this position, 2nd Fleet numbered 1011 members. As of May 1st, we number 1351 members. That is some amazing growth, and everyone should be proud of how we have grown. That is one of our greatest successes over the past few years.

We have, additionally, made a name for ourselves in the larger fandom community, with a successful Worldcon, hosting gaming tracks for online conventions, reviving MARCON, and being a presence at local events across the fleet. Our leadership in the larger fandom community is, perhaps, the best thing that has happened during my tenure. By growing our profile, our social capital, we can build a better Fleet, and through this a better Organization.

So, as I hand things off to VADM Thompson, I want to encourage everyone to keep up the good work, and help him be the best Fleet CO he can be, as he leads Second Fleet forward. We have a great group of people here, and I truly believe that there is no limit to what we can accomplish. So, thank you, and let’s be about it!

Chapter Reports

This is a reminder that your Chapter and MarDet reports are due between the 1st and 10th of every EVEN numbered month. One thing I found amazingly helpful when filling them out was to use an online document (Google Docs, Word Online) to keep things organized as they happened. Then, when the reporting month hit, I could just copy and paste them into the reports form, and be done. No trying to remember what happened two months ago at the last minute!

And a reminder that Marksmanship submissions are due the 20th of the month, so we have time to correlate and get things set for the award issuance.

Marines – you now have a new online form to fill out for Bi-Monthly reports. The link is below. It will send the reports to your command triad, your Ship’s CO and to ComForceCom. Please use this form to send in your report that is due on the 5th.

There is only one stipulation with the form at this time. Please do not use autofill. Autofill does not work properly and that information is deleted in the report. You can copy and paste information into the report but forgo the autofill function.

MARCON 2023

From one running convention promotion to another! It’s all about the conventions in Second Fleet these days.

MARCON 2023 will be held in Columbus, OH over Memorial Day weekend, and is being run by a member of HMS Vixen. Honestly, this is kind of something I was wanting to explore for several years – a non-TRMN convention run by a TRMN member, so this is great!

What is Marcon? The simplest answer is a weekend of fun. It is where everyone that enjoys movies, books, music, art, science, and everything in between comes together in one place to watch, talk about, dress like, sing, and/or learn from like minded people, be they writers, actors, scientists, artists, professionals of all kinds, or simply fans. MARCON has been running since 1966, and I hope it keeps going.

Of special interest to us is David Weber as GoH. He was last the Guest of Honor 20 years ago, so it is time to return to Columbus for the weekend and show our support!

JUST ANNOUNCED! Register using the code TRMN and the convention will donate $5 towards our party room! Click below to get registered!

Gryphon’s Wings Fleet Relief Project

On May 23rd we launched the Gryphon’s Wings Fleet Relief Project. The response has been overwhelming, and I am humbled by the generosity of our members.

We are currently in the midst of a Global pandemic. However, while we are all in the same storm, we are navigating the waters on different ships. Sometimes these waters will be more than we can handle on our own, and we need an extra hand on deck. We want you to know that the 2nd fleet is here for you.

To that end, we are asking for donations to create an emergency relief fund to be used for TRMN 2nd Fleet members. This fund’s target is to provide immediate short term relief of an urgent crisis. For example: Sending someone grocery money for a weeks worth of groceries (as a lot of food banks are running out of food, short on volunteers, and closing), providing gas money for a week so someone can still travel back and forth providing care-giving to a family member, covering the co-pay cost of a doctors visit, and other small emergency expenses. Anything helps. I am asking for a $5 monthly commitment – the cost of a Starbucks coffee – to assist. Please join me, and those who have already donated, in making TRMN more than just a fan group. Click here, or the banner below, to donate. Meet the Test.

At the same time, we know some are being affected by the effort to combat the virus, including job loss, other reduction of income, medical difficulties, etc. This can result in a tough choice between shelter, transportation, food, or medical care. That is an impossible choice no one should be required to face, and we want to help how we can.

To apply for a Visa Gift Card for you or another member, please click here.

Only the 2nd Fleet CO will see who the requester and/or the potential recipient is.  This will never be held against you in any way. We don’t ask for or expect repayment. This is not charity, we are simply keeping the RMN tradition of seeing that a Queen’s Navy is well rested, well fed, and healthy before going into battle. And this is a battle where victory will be measured in not just survivors but in the quality of that survival.

Flag Sends

Convention season is starting back up, and it’s time to get the Fleet front and center, reminding everyone that we are here, and we are ready for new members!

What does that mean today, though? I am going to poach directly from the United Church of Christ, and say that we need to be Open & Affirming (their website has their position on this, take a look to see the original).

O&A is an approach to membership that moves beyond ‘everyone is welcome’, and instead offers an active support to our members. Our approach is to not merely tolerate those who may be different, but to support their differences. Be those political, sexual, religious, whatever they may be, we support you, and want to include you.

That isn’t an invitation to abuse the welcoming attitude. If you insist on harming others, abusing others, etc. we can and will take action. To that end, if you, as a member, feel that someone had caused you harm, please let me, or your local leaders, know. This is supposed to be a fun group, made strong by our differences. If that fun becomes something negative, we need to help fix it.

So, get to your local convention, recruit, and remember that we are here for anyone and everyone, and welcome their uniqueness and difference. It makes us better.

Imperial Andermani Navy Recipe Challenge

Food is great!

Honor Harrington would agree.

James McGinnis, her Steward is a featured character; it can’t be understated how important food is in David Weber’s Honorverse. The descriptions of tastes of food is a focal point. Sharing a meal is equally important as well, Honor uses dinner to bond with her officers and other characters. The Tarakovs hold a dinner for the crew and family’s of after each deployment. The Graysons lost a lot of technology and live on a planet that wants them dead but by Tester they kept the waffle irons working and HOT! We at the Imperial Andermani Navy want to honor this sentiment in a way that will allow us to share and engage with each other over distances. So…from February 1st to March 31st the IAN is collecting recipes from all members!

We are asking you to share recipes with us so they can be shared with our members. The Imperial Andermani Navy is asking you to submit recipes that will be published here https://andermaninavy.org/galley/. We are not simply asking for any recipes however, we are asking you to share foods that bring you comfort, happiness, contentment, and good memories. Our goal is to create a place where you can look up and see what other members are eating and enjoying, a new way to engage with each other in the kitchen and at the table.

What we need from you is:

Download and fill out this Recipe Submission Form
Fill out your information
Only your rank, name, branch will be shared
You can request to have this submitted anonymously
Convert recipe for both Metric and Imperial measurements
Including cooking temperature
Note hard to find ingredients
Include more common substitution or a link to purchase with international shipping
Directions broken into steps
A picture of the finished project is highly encouraged

Once you have filled out the form you can email the attached documents to rosebushoffice@gmail.com. Here they will be received and posted here https://andermaninavy.org/galley/. Allow 7 Days for the recipe to be posted longer if there are questions or it is sent back to you for missing information.

Recipes that will be not be posted are recipes that contain:

Recipes for making Alcoholic beverages Ie. Beer, Wine, and Spirits
Illegal ingredients (Foie Gras and Marajuana are illegal in a lot of places)
Dangerous techniques such as flambé, dry ice, or anything more dangerous: these can be quite dangerous without training.

If your recipe contains one or more of the above you will get a response asking you to substitute the questioned technique or ingredient. If another member points out after posting that a recipe contains such an item that we were not aware of, the recipe will be hidden and we will reach out to ask for the substitution so that it can be posted again.

You can submit breakfast, lunch, dinner, dessert, drinks, complex dishes, 3 ingredient dishes, old family recipes, something you found in a book or online, even your secret for perfect hard boiled eggs are game. All we ask are for recipes that have come to mean something to you, recipes that have become staples of your own table and that you are comfortable sharing. Something you would make for a tRMN Potluck/Covered Dish party. We encourage you to submit them.

The IAN wants to facilitate a new way of asynchronous interaction amongst us that honors the books in a different way. Also to add some variety to what we are making. So please consider sharing your table as Honor did, when she broke bread with her officers…that McGinnis baked.

We also want to see which chapters are eating the best. At the end of this the chapter that has submitted the most recipes will earn bragging rights as the “Most well fed chapter”.

In Service of the Emperor

February is American Heart Month, a time when all people can focus on their cardiovascular health.

That is the first sentence on the CDC American Heart Month page. It’s poorly worded, since you can always focus on cardiac health. Had to get that out.

Anyway, Heart Health is vitally important for us all, and I want to encourage everyone to get checked out, especially if, like me, you have comorbidities, a great word meaning ‘other stuff wrong’.

Basically, anything that stresses your heart – high cholesterol, weight, high blood pressure, lack of exercise – all can be a comorbidity. Not to mention other factors that increase risk; factors like family history or race.

So take a moment to get your blood pressure checked; stop for a moment to sit in silence / pray / meditate; check your cholesterol; get an EKG; start an exercise program (if able)…do something to check your heart, and keep it healthy.

In a very real sense taking care of ourselves is the first step to caring for others, and that is something I want to encourage all of us to be part of. We are already connected, let’s use that for good.

List of Honor Submission Period Now Open

As of 0001Hrs, January 19, 2022, the submission period is open for the List of Honor.

Chapter CO’s shall submit submissions to buships@trmn.org no later than 2359(CDT) on February 17th, 2023
.
The List of Honor Citation:

The highest honor a ship can receive is to be named to the RMN List of Honor. The Third Space Lord has the privilege and honor to be the issuing authority for this award. This is open to all Manticoran hyper-capable chapters in organization.

This is a highly competitive award (Only ONE ship each year may be named to the List at this point in time). The award eligibility period is from 1 January 2022 through 31 December 2022.

Keep in mind as well that it is entirely possible for a ship to not be named on the List of Honor for each awarding period.

Due to the high caliber of this award, I encourage you to write detailed and clever submissions:

Since a ship action or singular event places a ship on the List of Honor in the books (Such as HMS Fearless on Basilisk Station,) only ship actions taken/performed during the 2022 calendar year are to be considered.

Chapters that have received the award in the past have done well with a chronological review of the year for which they submitted their winning bid, or created a PowerPoint presentation outlining the activities. I encourage you to be creative with your submissions and strive to tell us what really makes your chapter stand out. Take time to add metrics into the narrative, like hours worked, money raised, food collected, and other similar things of that nature. Make sure you focus on what the chapter achieved as a whole, we’re not looking for individual awards or single member achievements.

Again, due to the caliber of the award, the selection committee will be looking over these submissions thoroughly, and at the submitted chapters in MEDUSA and our historical registries. This includes both after action reports and chapter reports filed throughout calendar year 2022.

If your chapter has been placed on the List of Honor in the past, you must have waited at least three years from the time it was awarded before submission for a subsequent award.

Details for the List of Honor may be found on the Wiki.

If you have any questions about the submission process, please contact buships@trmn.org, we will be happy to clarify and respond to any inquiries.

We will accept submissions from ship CO’s ONLY at buships@trmn.org no later than 2359(CDT) on February 17th, 2023. Any submission received from a source other than that chapter or ship’s CO will be rejected.

If any echelon commanders wish to support a chapter submission, they can send a letter of endorsement to be attached to the submission being sent by ship’s CO. Please refrain from sending them separately, as they may be accidentally overlooked or not linked with the Chapter’s Submission.

Any and all submissions received after the deadline of 2359(CDT) on February 17th, 2023 will be rejected.

An announcement for the selection results shall be made no later than 28th of February, 2023.
In Service,

Nominations for The Protector’s Own

To: All Officers and Enlisted in the Grayson Space Navy, the Royal Manticoran Forces, Imperial Andermani Navy, Republic of Haven Navy and All Other Members of the Grand Alliance
From: High Admiral James Jones, GSN
Re: Protector’s Own Class of 2021 – Call for Nominations

Here Ye and Pray Attend All Grayson Citizens and All Members of the Grand Alliance:

I am pleased and honored to announce that the nomination period for the Protector’s Own is open, and will remain open until 23:59 EST 18 November 2021 (GMT -0500).

Any person, regardless of rank or branch, may submit nominations for the Protector’s Own.

The requirements for nomination:

Any Grayson may be nominated and considered for their contributions to the Grayson Space Navy and to the TRMN organization as a whole.

Those who are not Grayson may be eligible to be nominated for HMS Unconquered for their exemplary contributions to the TRMN organization as a whole, and nominations for them should be submitted to the Bureau of Ships for inclusion in this year’s deliberation. Nominations will be accepted at buships@trmn.org until 2359 CDT (GMT -0500) on 15 October 2021.

However, any TRMN member, of any rank and from any branch of service, may be nominated for the Protector’s Own, provided that they have profoundly benefitted, specifically, the Grayson Space Navy. Their nominations may include their contributions to TRMN, but the contributions to the GSN are the paramount requirement of the nomination and the decisive factor for their inclusion and in any deliberation.

It is preferred that the nominees have had at least 1 year in service to TRMN, but that will not be a bar from entry if the nomination thoroughly demonstrates exemplary contributions.

Please be as detailed as possible regarding the contributions of the nominee and how they have benefitted the GSN. Nominations must include the name and rank of the nominator and the full name of the nominee, including rank if known. It should have detailed information about the nominee’s specific contributions to the GSN and, if Grayson, to the TRMN as a whole. Please include dates and events or contributions, when possible. Any supporting documentation will be appreciated in the process and should be included in the nomination as attached files.

Nominations that are not detailed will be considered, but, will make the deliberation process more difficult and may hinder the nominee’s induction.

Please only submit one person per nomination email. Nominators may nominate as many members as they believe are worthy to receive this honor.
Individuals may not nominate themselves.
Please nominate any who you believe are worthy of this honor.

Protector’s Own Committee will be empaneled from current members of the Protector’s Own and members of the Office of the High Admiral. The Committee will begin deliberations on 19 November 2021.

The Command Triad for the Protector’s Own will be decided from all members of the Protector’s Own, including new inductees, except for those who are currently in the Protector’s Own Command Triad.

The Protector’s Own Class of 2021 and its Command Triad will be announced on 21 December 2021, in honor, and as part, of the Protector’s Birthday Celebrations.

Please send all nominations to ohagsn@gmail.com.

Upcoming Events

All members of TRMN and the public can view upcoming conventions and TRMN events in ConStack at:

https://constack.trmnbureaus.info/

If you see that an event is missing or has incorrect information, contact your Fleet’s BuPlan Intel Agent or Branch Liaison and they will get it updated.

Additionally, the Bureau of Planning is eager to get your feedback on conventions you attend. Please fill out an After Action Report (AAR) here.

Remember to record your convention and event participation in your Medusa promotion points record, under the Events tab.

In January 2022 we had 1283 members of Second Fleet. At this writing, we have 1344 members.

I wanted to bring that up because we have managed to continue to grow despite the challenges of the last few years. And that is all your doing! You, the members of Second Fleet have been there, interacting with people, and getting them interested in joining and becoming part of the team.

And thank you for that!

It is your work and showing who we are that helps us grow, and keeps us in front of the public. Our lack of visual properties makes our people being visible more important than it might for others. And we do that!

This is a big year for the RMN – we have a regional convention with David Weber as the Guest of Honor, MARCON over Memorial Day in Columbus, OH; we also have a return of Manticon as a part of Bay Con over the Independence Day holiday in Santa Clara, CA. These are both big deals for us, and I encourage you, if possible, to attend at least one (MARCON is closer…) and join in our celebrations. It’s going to be fun!

FLA’s 2022 Holiday Message

Hello to all members of The Royal Manticoran Navy: The Official Honor Harrington Fan Association, Inc.

2022 has been an interesting year for the organization in more ways than one, and we will see some changes in 2023, but more on that in a little bit. In less than a week, it will be a New Year, and as such, it is time for me to ruminate on what has happened this past year.

With COVID becoming endemic this year, TRMN came out of a global health emergency for the better. During the pandemic, members took to platforms that supported virtual meetings, and we had an incredible run of the TRMN Social Hour; all of which served to bring our members together when we all needed the support. This year, I am very pleased and proud to see TRMN members participating in conventions again. With a lot of conventions taking up the banner of health and safety, it is wonderful to see our members leading by example in employing all possible precautions. We’re taking the initiative in getting vaccines and boosters as recommended by health organizations all over the world. As we live with this new condition, we should continue to remain vigilant when it comes to protecting each other from further exposure.

Of course, not all our events were successful. Prior to the pandemic, we had plans to run a special one-time LARP in conjunction with Quest Productions. Unfortunately, Quest departed the project due to COVID-related concerns, and although we attempted to go it alone, ultimately we were left with the decision to cancel the event entirely. It is my hope that once we’re clear of the fallout leftover from the pandemic, we might see if interest in a LARP would make a future event possible. I am personally disappointed we didn’t get to see this to fruition as I think it could have been a phenomenal experience for our members and our organization.

In a few days, it will be a New Year. 2023. It will be an important year for the Fan Association in many respects. Our updated Corporate ByLaws go into effect on July 1, at BayCon, which is also MantiCon. Within the new Bylaws is corporate governance that will keep us compliant as a non-profit corporation, changing the nature of how our Board of Directors is designated. This change will move the Royal Council to a steering committee for the overall member operations of the club. Now, for the average member, these changes will be seamless, but they will streamline many of the operational issues we currently have and also it will give us much tighter control over our overall finances. More information on these changes will be disclosed in the months leading up to their date of effect. All of the current members of the Royal Council have been briefed on those changes, so I encourage you to discuss it with your branch leaders if you have questions.

This brings us to a discussion of who we are. We are The Royal Manticoran Navy: The Official Honor Harrington Fan Association, Inc. What does that mean? It means we are fans of Honor Harrington and, by extension, the Honorverse. We are a fan club of an amazing female protagonist who has demonstrated that women can do anything a man can do, sometimes even better. We are a fan club who accepts that a Queen and Empress can be a Person of Color, and that this does not limit or diminish her in any way. We are a fan club which rejects racism, rejects misogyny, rejects bullying, and rejects discrimination of all kinds. We are a fan club which provides a Safe Space to all. We are a fan club which welcomes all, regardless of gender or race. We are a fan club which embraces empathy and compassion toward all our members. We are a fan club that prioritizes openness and friendship. We are a fan club which supports honesty, transparency and support for all of our members. This is who we, The Royal Manticoran Navy: The Official Honor Harrington Fan Association, Inc are.

Further, as of January 1, 2023, we will be striving to live up to the ideals of who we are as a Fan Association. Within our Membership Handbook is our Code of Conduct, and in the past, we’ve irregularly applied it. Moving forward, we will be holding our members to that code with an even hand approach. To that end, I will be working with the Office of the Judge Advocate General to ensure we have an understandable interpretation of the Code of Conduct and its application toward the membership. This information will be shared so that every member understands what our Code of Conduct means.

This year also marks the half-way point through our current Ten-Year Plan. We are hitting most of our goals, to which I applaud our leadership team, including our branch leaders and space lords. For those goals where we are falling behind, we will be working together to catch up. Amongst those goals not yet reached is the translation of our documentation to include our friends in countries where English is not the primary language. We’re also making some course corrections, as one expects that a goal that looked great on paper in 2017 may no longer be applicable in 2023 and beyond. This obviously includes goals such as recruiting and retention, and the hope to reactivate some members who have fallen off the map. These will require work with many divisions and departments and may cause some changes there as well. I’d like to recognize the Bureau of Ships and the Bureau of Personnel as two of the many groups in our organization who’ve been working hard against global events; we’ll be working with them to adjust those goals in 2023.

Another change coming soon will be the creation of the Second Lord of the Admiralty. This position will act as the Deputy for the First Lord of the Admiralty. Once a person has been put into that role, I will begin training them to step into the role of First Lord of the Admiralty, and after five years, I will be stepping down. At that point, I will have led TRMN for twenty-five years.

A lot of changes are coming next year, and our members have proven that they’re up to the challenges facing our organization. As we move forward together, I hope that everyone will take up the mantle of Honor Harrington and drive to be a better organization and lead by example in the fandom community.

With that in mind and in heart, I would like to wish you all a very Happy New Year, and in the memorable words of our namesake, “Let be about it!”

In Service to the Empress,
Admiral of the Fleet Martin A. Lessem, KSK, GCR, GCE, SC, OGL, DSO

Happy Holidays to everyone. It has been a whirlwind year, and we have managed to come through not only intact, but better than when we started the year.

Our local focus on social capital and real preparedness, modeled on larger self-run groups, has resulted in a much improved reputation among both the Chicago fandom as well as the larger fandom community. How we approached Worldcon was the key driver here, and through this we we able to impress and show who we are.

We have also begun work on MARCON 2023, a convention one of our members took upon themselves to save from going under. His first choice was to secure David Weber as Guest of Honor, so we are planning to pull out all the stops and make this a convention to remember. Don’t miss this!

There will also be some major changes at MARCON, as I will be stepping down as Fleet CO, and taking some time on the proverbial beach. Of course, we will be doing this at an award ceremony, and loading the results up to all the online places, showing off the Fleet in all our finery. More to come on that in time.

So, thank you, Happy Holidays, and be safe!

Teddy Bear Drive 2022

Here is the announcement that you all have been waiting for. We collected over $4,600 with which we were able to purchase over 625 bears. The final standings are as follows:

Third (San Martino) Fleet – $1,433.51
Second (Gryphon) Fleet – $973.71
First (Home) Fleet – $930.83
Seventh (Andermani) Fleet – $588.50
Tenth (Talbott) Fleet – $218.55
RMA (Royal Manticoran Army) – $121.36
Eighth (Basilisk) Fleet – $81.83
Fourth (Grayson) Fleet – $78.46
Sixth (Sphinx) Fleet – $34.01
Thirteenth (Silesian) Fleet – $10.00

Congratulations to Third Fleet, they are this year’s Grand Teddy Bears. Thank you to everyone who participated and BZ TRMN for a job well done!!!

December Blood Drive Challenge

From: CO, HMS Vixen
RE: Showing Those Marines Their Place

Crew,

It has come to my attention that COL Tizura, RMMC, has been narfing about the ship claiming that the ‘button pushers’ – that would be our noble RMN crew – are too afraid of getting our uniforms dirty to do the ‘real work’ of the RMMC. He claims that the Navy trembles at the sight of blood, and that we haven’t the courage to shed our precious bodily fluid for the glory of Her Majesty.

This affront must not stand! I call on all loyal subjects of Her Majesty’s Navy to join me in donating blood to support our local hospitals in need during this pandemic! Show these crayon-eaters that we can and will shed blood for a worthy cause (and not just for the 64 pack with sharpener)!

RE: Time To Show The Navy What For!

Marines,

The vacuum-suckers think they have the courage to stand with us on the field of honor! They claim to not fear the sight of blood, and that they will easily donate more than our Marines.

Not likely! Marines lead the way, and we will in this as well. As you know, there has been a shortage of blood this year due to the ongoing pandemic. We all need to do our part! So I am calling on all of us to part with a spot of the kroovy and help our fellow citizens!

Now get out there, and prove yourselves! We are MARINES, and used to having holes poked in us!

Possimus Perficio!

RE: December 2022 Blood Drive Challenge

Gryphons,

As the pandemic as been ongoing, blood donations have dropped. Sadly, the demand for blood products has not. In order to assist the hospitals in our operational area, I am pleased to see this friendly (it is friendly, right…) competition between branches.

Between December 1 and December 31, donate blood and post a photo of you doing so to the HMS Vixen Discord (https://discord.gg/QynkCaUQ6P in the #blood-wars channel). Preferably in uniform of some kind. If you are not RMN or RMMM, pick a team to add your donation to. There will be an award for all who donate, and a higher award for the team who donated the most.

If you can donate COVID plasma, and do, please say so. I will track that separately.

If you cannot donate blood, and can support the mission of your local blood bank in another way, post that too. Thank you, and let’s be about it!
